Three Major Events in Pennsylvania September 16-19, 2013
Fort Ligonier, the Johnstown Flood Museum, The Windber Coal Heritage Center, the Flight 93 Memorial, a visit to the Quecreek Mine Rescue Foundation, a behind the scenes tour of the Palace Theater, and enjoy wine and pie at Sand Hill Berries and Green Dance Winery.

Day 1 – Depart for Pennsylvania where you will tour three major event sites that have all taken place in Pennsylvania. After comfort stops and lunch on your own at the very popular Mehlman Cafeteria in St. Clairsville, Ohio, arrive at the Ramada Inn in Fort Ligonier. The Ramada Ligonier rolls out the red carpet with a welcome reception upon arrival and includes assorted cheese and crackers, coffee, hot tea and iced tea. Tonight’s dinner will be in tour. Enjoy a “Sentimental Jukebox Journey”, the dinner show and musical review featuring 40’s, 50’s and 60’s music performed at your hotel. (D)
Day 2 - Begin your day with a full breakfast at your hotel before a guided tour of Fort Ligonier. Step back to 18th century frontier life and enjoy the fabulous exhibit, The World Ablaze, along with young George Washington’s original memoirs and portrait on display. Your next stop is a guided tour of the Compass Inn Museum, an authentically restored 1799 stagecoach stop. Here costumed docents tell the story of life during the early 1800’s. The tour includes the inn, cookhouse, barn, blacksmith shop and gift shop. Lunch on your own in Ligonier with free time to explore the specialty shops in Ligonier. Afterwards head to Sand Hill Berries and Green Dance Winery for dessert and a wine tasting. This family owned and operated small fruits farm specializes in red raspberries, red currants, black currants, blackberries, strawberries and much more, allowing for the perfect dessert and wine stop. Scenic grounds and a great gift shop complete the stop. Next, you will head to the Palace Theater in Greensburg for a behind the scenes tour of this historic theater which was originally built in 1926. For dinner this evening, enjoy a delightful plated meal at The Supper Club Restaurant located at the Greensburg Train Station, Westmoreland County’s only Farm-to-Table dining experience. (B,D)
Day 3 - Enjoy a full breakfast at the hotel and then depart for you day of touring, beginning with a tour of the Johnstown Flood Museum. Discover the shocking story of the 1889 Johnstown flood, in which 2,209 people perished and a prospering city became a wasteland. Exhibits, artifacts and an Academy award winning documentary tell the amazing story of the disaster. You will next ride (up & down) the Incline Plane. The Plane was constructed as a lifesaver after the first flood in 1889 and it lived up to that name rescuing victims during the floods of 1936 and 1977. It is noted in the “Guinness Book of World Records” as the steepest funicular in the world. The Windber Coal Heritage Center tour follows. It is the only interactive museum in the eastern U.S. dedicated to telling the story of the everyday lives of miners and their families. Lunch on your own at the Our Coal Miner’s Café. Located in a historic inn from 1930, it has incorporated artifacts and tributes to the coal mining heritage with its home-style cooking and delicious homemade desserts. After lunch visit the National Park Service site, Flight 93 Memorial, and pay your respects and remember the impact of that fateful day, September 11, 2001.You will also be able to visit the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel. The chapel includes artifacts, including signs and remembrances that were left at properties near the crash site, relics from the World Trade Center and personal items belonging to passengers and crew aboard Flight 93. Your next stop is at the Quecreek Mine Rescue Foundation to here the captivating story of miners trapped for over 77 hours. You will also visit the Quecreek Memorial where the Arnold family tells the story of spirit and teamwork that made it all possible. Tonight you head to the Rockwood Mill Shoppes & Opera House for a patriotic themed dinner show to complete the day. The century old lumber and feed mill has been transformed into Mainstreet USA and upstairs a restored opera house captures the essence of a by-gone era. There will be time to visit the Rockwood Shoppes as well. (B,D)
Day 4 - Enjoy a full breakfast at the hotel before a visit to St. Vincent Gristmill or St. Vincent Cathedral. (based on availability) The gristmill has been in continuous operation since 1854 and provides flour and other grain products milled by the Benedictine monks. A variety of breads and flour products are available to purchase at the general store. A quick stop will be made at Neubauer’s Market House, a restored livery building that offers shopping for an array of items for home, garden and Christmas options. Caporella’s Italian Ristorante in Uniontown is your lunch stop and a fine way to wrap up your visit to the Laurel Highlands. (B, L)
